Please note: from December 2015, we will be concentrating on our relaunch and so we will not be organising our usual Sunday Gatherings. We will still be organising some events, including on a Sunday, so please keep in touch with us via our News Page, Facebook or Twitter, or ask us a question on this site.
We have changed the remaining information on this page so that it is generally correct for any events we hold. If you are completely new to church, or thinking of returning, you might want to read our New to Us? guide first.
What should I expect?
Firstly, let’s assure you of a warm welcome, regardless of who you are, where you’re from and how you feel. It doesn’t matter if this is your thousandth time in church, or if you’ve never set foot in a church before, or if you’ve been feeling like you never want to see a church again.
The Bridge is open to all and we welcome everyone, regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, race, background, or any of the other things that humans tend to divide themselves up with.
Where do I go?
Temporarily, we’ve stopped meeting at our usual base at Hastings High School. This is so we can concentrate our energy and prayers on working towards our relaunch in 2016.
We will be organising some events in the meantime, and you can find out more about these on our News Page.
What will I see?
We hope that you’ll find The Bridge on a Sunday to be different from a regular in several ways. Most obvious to a newcomer is that we don’t meet in a “church” (although, really, no-one meets in a church – the church isn’t the building). We might meet in people’s homes, coffee bars, pubs, meeting rooms and elsewhere.
This does give us the flexibility to set out each meeting how we like, and to suit the content of the meeting. So, we might sits on rows if we are watching a video, or gather around tables for games, or in groups for a discussion.
What will we do?
There are two key principles we’ve always kept at The Bridge:
Come as you really are
This isn’t a qualified statement – we really do want to to be yourself. Be comfortable, arrive when you can, leave if you need to. We hope you’ll want to stay a while.
Feel free not to do things
We’ve all felt uncomfortable about joining in new things, or just uncomfortable full stop – and that’s fine. At The Bridge, we feel the most important thing is that you can just be rather than feeling you have to do. So, feel free to take part in as much or as little as you wish. No-one will look at you if you choose not to sing, or not to pray, or not to take part in any of the activities. We want you to feel comfortable and at home.
When running our Sunday Gatherings, one further essential has been to offer food and drink to share. It’s a chance to mix, talk, catch up with events, and be part of the community. We aim to keep this up as we move through the next phase of our journey.
Above all, we want to reach out to all people, and welcome them to our community. What we do together then, could be up to you too – our community decides where we go as a church, and you can help shape that too, if you wish.
